This is a review of the i-toc, a designer clock and Screensaver application for your Symbian smartphone.
Review Conditions
The i-toc application from i-toc was installed on a Nokia E71, a s60 3rd, FP 1 device.
Installation
i-toc version 1.10.0 was installed via the Nokia PC Suite installer. Installation is simple and quick.
First View
The i-toc is a designer clock and screensaver for your Symbian smartphone. Once installed, it can be invoked with a single click to check the time or can function as a screensaver.
There are a lot of symbian clock applications that function as screensavers. Handyclock is the most popular and is rich in features. Clock Scnsvr is another application that lets you to show two clocks on the screen with two different timezones. Symbian OS also has a default screensaver that shows the time and date.
But i-toc is a beautiful clock cum screensaver that has a very unconventional design. The application installed has a simple clock called “Binary” i-toc. Additional i-tocs or “clock skins” as they can be called, can be added to the phone by downloading them from here for a small fee. There are several i-tocs available on the i-toc website and its a fun thing to get new i-tocs when you are bored with the current one.
Main Features
The i-toc design has two graduated rings (fading from light to dark) tell the time. The inner ring is the “hour” hand and the outer ring is the “minute” hand. There are several variations to this design. The picture below shows the Binary i-toc.
The i-toc application shows the a thumbnail pic of all the i-tocs that are installed on the mobile device. We can choose the i-toc that we want to be on the screensaver.
The i-toc clock can be splashed on the idle-screen anytime by pressing a key. On my E71, the ”Shift” key is configured to make the clock appear on the idle-screen. An application called “PicTocLauncher” runs in the background. This is a very unique feature and I find it quite useful. The PicTocLauncher can be configured to Autostart or can be enabled / disabled at run-time.
The screensaver can be configured too.
Some i-tocs also have additional display options that are configurable. I noticed that these display options do not appear for all i-tocs.
The i-tocs can also be customized. There are custom options for the Minute Hand, Hour Hand and the Bezel and one can create several combinations.
Here are a few i-tocs that look great on the phone.
Handling
The application has a very simple and easy to use interface for selecting different i-tocs and for customizing them. The are many options for customization.
Weaknesses
I had some trouble installing new i-tocs after the installation of the basic binary i-toc. It seemed to be a problem with the OS on my E71. But the i-toc support team was very prompt and responded very quickly to my questions and got it working. If you have trouble installing new i-tocs, just copy them to E:datapictoc and you are ready to go!
Conclusion
The i-toc is a cool clock application for your mobile and its definitely worth a look. The Binary or the basic version comes for free for a short time and can be downloaded from the website. There are a few more products in the i-toc stable, called pic-toc, tic-toc and a real wrist watch.
