Have you been trying to install an application on your Symbian smartphone but it ended up in getting a certificate error? Don’t mind, there is an easy way to solve this problem. Here is the solution:

point your device to the “Application Manager” and open it

click the left soft key to open the options menu

from the list choose the point “Settings”

switch the option “Software Installation” to “All”

switch the option “Online certif. check” to “Off”

Pretty easy, wasn’t it? Additionally I have to tell you some little things about executing these instructions.

First you have to remember that certificates for applications are there for security reasons. If “Signed only” is choosen you can just install applications that have trusted certificates, that can only be obtained by enterprises. If Software installation is set to “All” you can also install self signed applications. That means, that the software author created the certificate by himself.

Secondly you have to know, that certificates are not the most important point when it comes to security. Once you installed an application, you may have noticed that you were warned against some features of the phone that will be used by the application. They are called capabilities and can be allowed or denied during the installation. So be careful which capabilities you allow for an application, because some of them can lead to costs or damage your system. You can find a list of capabilities at Forum Nokia.

Today I will introduce an application to you, that is essential for every operating system. Since the file browser that ships with Nokias Symbian devices is pretty poor regarding functionality, there is a big market for advanced file managers. Y-Browser is one that tries to fill the gap.

Review conditions

I installed the latest version 0.88(2) of Y-Browser on my Nokia E65.

Installation

Y-Browser is installed very quick: just point your internet browser to drjukka.com and click on the download link. The installations starts immediately, just choose one or more of the 32 available languages and you can begin to use it after some seconds. But in order to gain full functionality you should install some of the plugins that are also available on the official site.

First view

As expected from a native application, Y-Browser starts pretty fast. You will get to see the drives of your phone and browse around your file system via the directions keys.

Main features

Naturally Y-Browser is for browsing through the folders of your device. You can cut, copy and paste files and folders. Furthermore you can select multiple files via pencil key or delete files via delete key.

Another nice feature is the integrated file search. There are two ways to look for files. You can either turn on search in the menu and begin searching for files in the same folder just by typing letters, or you switch to the search menu where you can perform an advanced search for looking through the whole file system.

Besides these basic operations you can also view file attributes like the date of last change and even edit these attributes.

What is more it is possible to view all files of your mail folders. You will need to install the “Mail Folders” plugin for that feature. If you would like to open files directly out of Y-Browser you can set up file associations for specific file types.

Handling

When I had Y-Browser in use it was very easy to browse around and perform actions without having to look for how to do it, that’s what I call intuitive handling. It is also possible to set up custom shortcuts, a nice feature if you want to have full control over the handling, but I would prefer having some standard and pre set shortcuts.

Weaknesses

One weakness I noticed in my review of Y-Tasks, also appears in Y-Browser. When switching to landscape mode the functions of the directions keys do not switch properly, intuitive handling is no longer possible then. Another little thing is that in fullscreen mode a small white bar appears at the bottom, but that problem only exists on certain Symbian 3.0 devices. Aside from these I didn’t find any weaknesses.

Conclusion

The application Y-Browser on it’s own is really functional, high-performance and easy to use. If you have the offered plugins installed it gets even better. With Y-Browser you get a stronger computer like feeling of your mobile phone. 4 of 5 stars.

I think it is time to introduce a little tool I have been using very often on my phone, especially for the reviews you can read here. ScreenSnap is a small helper application for taking screenshots of your smartphone display. Since there are so many screenshot utilities I just tried out some of them. The one I sticked to was ScreenSnap.

Review conditions

For this review I have been using ScreenSnap Version 1.00 on my Nokia E65.

Installation

ScreenSnap is as usually very easy to install, there is no need to sign it or set up anything special. Just download the file and follow the installation wizard.

Main features

Because ScreenSnap has pretty limited features I will skip the first view and walk over to the main features chapter of our reviews directly. The program does exactly what it is supposed to do. It just
consists of one screen for setting up everything to your needs. Once the app ist started just push the right soft key to hide it. Now you can begin taking screenshots. But before doing that you should set up
a proper shortcut. For my needs the combination of the keys “pencil” and “Ok” does it best. That may be different on other devices than the E65. Some keys like the direction keys cannot be used as a shortcut. You can also choose between different image formats and quality types.
Instead of saving images in a specified path of the phone or the memory card, ScreenSnap also offers the possibility of sending the image directly via bluetooth or email. If you choose this action, you will get asked for the way to send the image directly after taking a screenshot. Furthermore you can enter a prefix for the output files to ident them easily as screenshots in your directory.

Handling

ScreenSnap is very easy and intuitive to use. Since there is just one main screen there is nothing negative to say about that. I don’t know if this could be done better.

Weaknesses

Hard to say something about weaknesses. One thing that I don’t like is that I couldn’t get rid of the sound when taking screenshots. Maybe that issue is paired with the global system sound of the camera. Another weakness could be the few image formats you can choose out of. Jpeg was my choice, but png would be useful.

Conclusion

I don’t know if ScreenSnap is the best software for that purpose, because I didn’t try out too many. But ScreenSnap is free, very lightweight, makes good quality pictures and is easy to use, so I can recommend it without any doubts. 4 of 5 stars.

I installed ScummVM version 0.11.1 on my Nokia N80. As you can see the program is far away from version 1.0.

Installation

The installation is easy as usual. Download the binaries for Symbian S60 version 3 (3.1 Megabyte for version 0.11.1) and install the sis-file on your mobile. Be sure that installing unsigned software is enabled.

First view

When you start ScummVM the program automatically switches to landscape mode. The main menu is shown and of course there are no games at this time. In the options you can select different settings for graphics, audio and others. But in my opinion the default settings are optimal. You should just select a path for your save games. And now let’s add a game…

Main features

For installing a game you just have to copy the game folder from your Computer to your mobile. When you click Add game… a file browser opens where you can select the game folder you chose previously. ScummVM detects the game and adds it to the list in the main menu. You also can select different settings for each game (Edit game…). ScummVM supports a lot of classic games - you can find a compatibility list on the official website - allthough the program version is only 0.11.1.

Now you just have to click Start and you can enjoy the selected game. I intensively played Zak McKracken on my Nokia N80 and the performance is great. The old school midi sound is very good and funny too. (Auto) Saving and Loading works perfect if you selected a save path.

Handling

Handling is a little bit tricky, but the longer you play the more you get used to it. You navigate the cursor via the direction keys. The left button is a left click, with the right button you can cancel sequences and so on (should be Escape). With 9 the cursor jumps to three different positions for faster navigation of the cursor. You can open the ScummVM menu for loading, saving, quitting, etc. via *.

The console is opened via #. You can close the console or the ScummVM menu via the C button. Advanced options can be controlled by pressing the call button. Then CTRL is activated and 2 turns the landscape mode off, 3 inverts the screen (only in landscape mode) and 4 turns off full screen. With 1 in CTRL mode you change the input type. But I don’t recommend switching to the other two input types because you can’t control the cursor then. After changing advanced options don’t forget to disable the CTRL mode again with the call button. Via the options you can also assign different keys yourself.

Weaknesses

There where a few crashes, but not while I was playing. My installation always crashed after starting ScummVM and clicking Options at first. When I clicked another button before Options worked normally.
It would be very useful if you could use alphabetic characters in the default input type for quickly selecting the action you want to do. But except these minor weaknesses I couldn’t find others.

Conclusion

I bought Zak McKracken years ago together with a magazine. If you liked these classic point-and-click adventures like me you have to try out ScummVM. But be aware: Don’t get addicted. The weaknesses are nothing compared to the fun you get with these classic games. And ScummVM is still in development and at early state. I have to give ScummVM 5 of 5 stars!

Download ScummVM

When I formerly was jogging I wondered what distance I completed and what time it took me. Furthermore I wanted to know about my speed and would have liked to compare it to former runs. Now there is something that could help me, and you of course, to keep an eye on your training status.

Review conditions

For testing purposes I installed Nokia Sports Tracker in Version 1.71 for S60 3.0 on my Nokia E65. Please notice, that Sports Tracker is still in Beta status.

Installation

First you have to download Sports Tracker in the specific version for your device. After downloading the file, step through the familiar installation process. For tracking data you will need either an external GPS device or the built-in ones, like Nokia N95 has. Pairing my E65 with my external bluetooth GPS worked very well.

First view

At the first start of the application I recommend to establish a wireless lan connection, because you will need a free account to use the Sports Tracker properly. I did that and set up a user. You can also define some details about your person like age, gender, height and weight.

Main features

I think the name says exactly what this application does: it tracks your sport exercises. Select New Workout, tell it if you are running, walking, cycling or skiing and press start. Unless you have a valid GPS connection you can go for your workout. A nice fullscreen shows you some interesting data, a landscape mode is also possible but that didn’t make sense for me at this time. While you work out there are six different views that aggegrate facts that are pretty interesting to know. It shows your current speed, average speed, altitude, distance, time and others. But that is not all, Sports Tracker creates three different graphs showing for instance your speed and the distance. You can navigate through the screens via top and down key very easily.

Do you have a data flatrate? Turn on live sharing and your trackings will be available online for everyone you want to be able to see your workout live. When you finished a lap, just press the right soft button and the lap-time shows up. If you have finished your workout you can stop the tracking and save the recorded data. A pretty nice feature is that you can define every workout as a specific route. When you are running at the same way again and again you can compair your performance very easily through that feature and observe your training status. For that purpose you can also take a look at the training diary, where a small calendar shows up, that marks the days where you did your training.

But that is not all. Noka Sports Tracker also offers a nice web interface where you can upload your data to for sharing and viewing your trackings online. That could look like the following. Unfortunately the GPS data delivered where not pretty acurate at this point.

Besides that the mobile application also offers multi user support, as you can add new user profiles for the use of Sports Tracker. Furthermore there is the possibility of looking for pictures associated with your workout. Sports Tracker does this automatically, does a search for pictures created during the workput and lets you upload them.

Handling

Since the Sports Tracker is made by Nokia I expected the application to be very easy to use. And that is really true. It can be controlled intuitively. There is nothing negative to point out here.

Weaknesses

One thing I have to mention at this point is, that Sports Tracker did not ask which connection to use when I tried to upload my workouts. The application did just nothing but showing a progress bar. Aborting and reentering the preferred connection solved this issue.

Conclusion

Nokia is not the first who tries to connect technology and sports. But who needs Nike + iPod? I am really overwhelmed by the functionality Nokia Sports Tracker offers. I can do everything I expect of such an application, and even more. And the best: it is free. Nokia Sports Tracker is an excellent way to keep an eye on your workouts, even though it is still in beta status. In my opinion 5 of 5 stars are appropriate.

For me it was never easy to manage all things I had to do. But not only things I had to do were hard to handle, also appointments, timetables or anniversaries wanted to get organised. Whether using a hand-written planner or a software for that purpose depends on your personal preference, but it has to be fast and usable. I tried out Papyrus as an application that should help me getting things done and be supportive of my time management.

Review conditions

Of course Papyrus in the latest version 1.3 was my choice, using an E65 for testing purpose.

Installation

Nothing special to say about that. Installation is very easy, you do not have to do any special things to get Papyrus running.

First view

When starting Papyrus the first time I immediately noticed that Papyrus integrates into the system properly, loading all calendar items of my phone.

Moving around in the calendar works pretty fast. A nice feature is the cycle through the different views by pressing the right soft-key. Papyrus looks good at the first view, but let’s find out where the advantages over the built-in calendar are.

Main features

Naturally Papyrus is a tool to manage meetings, tasks, notes, reminders or anniversaries and view them in a manner that helps you getting things done in time. You can create all these different calendar items, just select a date with the direction keys, then select menu and what you would like to create. The create/edit view opens up, where you can easily set up everything you need.

You can set up start and ending times, alarms, create a series of meetings, add notes, categories or even attendees. Papyrus comes with quite a huge list of pre-defined categories, you can select multiple categories for every item. But why choose categories? Simply because you can set up filters on each view to show just the categories you would like to see. At work you might not be willing to be shown birthdays of family members. Another smart feature is the possibility of adding pre-defined text blocks where ever you can type in text. That is why you don’t need to write often used phrases again and again. I imagine that this could save a lot of time.

Ok, now we have some features that cannot be done with the build-in calendar, but where is the quantum leap? In my opinion Papyrus is worth the money because of the abilities to show events, list them, sort them, filter them, navigating through them and making everything look like you want it. At first there is the monthly view. Here you get an overview about the whole month. How much time of each day is occupied by your events can be seen by the small white bars. The blue areas are in use already. Secondly there is the grid view, that shows one week and every single event that takes place at a certain date. At last there is the list view, where you are presented all events of one week in a list, like the name says. The best of all these views is, that every view has its own special filter and sort functionality, that makes it really usable.

Another point where Papyrus performs very well is customisation. In the Settings menu you can set up nearly everything, from preferred views over icons for categories to different colours for events. You can also change settings for each of the four main views. I call that ideal.

Handling

For me the handling is one of the most important things on an application for time management. If it is hard to use you won’t use it in daily life. Papyrus passes this section pretty good. Navigating around the calendars is quick and easy, creating events, reminders or tasks works intuitively. I tested how long it takes to open Papyrus and create a new tasks with an alarm. It took me under a minute to do so, that is ok for a smartphone, but of course not as fast as you could do this when writing by hand.

Weaknesses

It is hard for me to find weaknesses in Papyrus. For my needs it offers full functionality. It didn’t crash or did any unexpected things. Did you find weaknesses?

Conclusion

Before installing Papyrus I was quite doubtful if it could be useful. Papyrus changed my opinion about what functionality a calendar has to offer. For self management Papyrus is very useful, it integrates into the existing calendar and let’s you sync all data with your computer. My rating is 5 of 5.

Today I’d like to review a program called WorldMate. The application provides you with travel information like for example weather forecasts.

Review conditions

I installed WorldMate version 5.10.34 on my Nokia N80. To update its data the program requires an Internet connection, therefore I used wireless LAN.

Installation

The easiest way to install WorldMate is via the browser of your smartphone. Just go to http://mobile.mobimate.com/s60 and download WorldMate. The installer starts automatically and you only have to follow the instructions as usual.

First view

After starting WorldMate the first time you have to register with your email address and configure basic settings like country and city. After you completed the basic setup you see the main menu. From here you can go to the different tools.

Main features

But before you start using WorldMate I recommend to open the settings and choose the correct access point. You can configure temperature and measuring units, confirming of connections and updating as well. In the free version you can use the tools clocks, currency, weather forecast, weather caster and world map. When you want to start a tool in WorldMate the application shows a short description of that tool. If you press dismiss the description won’t be shown in future. With the tool clocks you can see the time time of your and four other cities all over the world. Of course you can change each city via the options. The currency tool is a converter for three currencies at the same time. The rates can be updated via the Internet and you can change each of the three currencies individually.

Weather forecast offers you a forecast of the next five days for the city of your choice. The forecast includes highs and lows and the weather conditions. The data has to be updated via the Internet. With the tool world map you can see the day and night status of the world and the location of a lot of cities. The time and weather status of the chosen city is also displayed. The last tool is weather caster. Unlike the other tools weather caster works passive. You can configure two reports as you like. You can set days, time and if the report is visual or also vocal. A report includes highs and lows, weather condition and information about wind and humidity.

Handling

WorldMate is really easy to use and self-explanatory. You just have to use the direction keys and three buttons. Changing cities or currencies can be done via the options menu. That’s it.

Weaknesses

Because of the simplicity of WorldMate there are no great weaknesses. We were a bit annoyed with the advertisement of the pro version. Another weakness is that you can’t choose an access point when a connection is going to be established. Especially if you travel and use different access points this is unfavourable. A useful feature we missed would be to start reports manually and not only scheduled.

Conclusion

WorldMate is a really simple but useful application. It offers many useful tools, especially for traveling. Of course there are little weaknesses and the other three tools are only included in the pro version but because of the easy handling and the good information the program provides I rate the free version of WorldMate with 4 of 5 stars.

Installation

At first you have to install the main application Y-Tasks. The installer creates an extra folder “DrJukka.com” where all applications of the same author, like Y-Browser, will be moved into. Since the main application is just some kind of loader, you need to install several plug-ins. Without plug-ins you can’t do anything with Y-Tasks. Installing all plug-ins is quite a long procedure, but you are very flexible and don’t need to install things you don’t use. Uninstalling single plug-ins is also possible.

First view

Once everything is installed you get a pretty powerful tool. In the main menu you can switch to landscape mode or choose between list or grid styled menus, while the grid menu is hard to read.

For instance you can view all applications installed on your phone with the possibility to show information or launch them. You can also view running tasks, switch to them or close them directly. Functions mostly take some seconds to load. They do what they are supposed to do: providing information on your system.

Main features

One of the main features of Y-Tasks is the “Memory Status” panel. It will show you how much RAM is still available and how much space is free on your disks with nice pie charts on just one page. Very well arranged. From the menu it is possible to compress RAM. Unfortunately this function doesn’t free any memory at all, perhaps because there is enough free RAM left.

Another interesting function delivered by Y-Tasks is the “Apps & Tasks” panel. Every single application installed on your smartphone is shown there. You can directly launch a chosen app or show information about it. What is more, this panel shows every active task. From here you can either switch to a task or close it.

A very nice feature is “Trace”. Trace tracks CPU and RAM usage. Once you activated Trace a thread is started that records these information, even when the main application Y-Tasks is closed. If you start it again you will be shown CPU load in a nice graph. To see all processes and threads running on your phone just start according plug-in.

There are still some more or less advanced features to mention. At the one hand there is this list of all registered file types and their associated applications. You sadly cannot change the associations here, would have been a nice feature. At the other hand Y-Tasks offers some functions that seem to be very useful for software developers. These may be the crash monitor and a kind of test centre for fonts. As the name already says the crash monitor will watch programs and what happened if they crashed. Behind “Fonts” you can paste some text or open a text file and apply different fonts to the text.

Handling

There is almost nothing to complain about the handling of Y-Tasks and its plug-ins, since this application can be mostly controlled by the directions keys. It doesn’t have any shortcuts, and it doesn’t need any. All in all a very intuitive handling.

Weaknesses

I just found three major weaknesses when using Y-Tasks. One problem is the installation. It just takes to long to install all needed plug-ins seperately. Why not offer an installer that installs the whole package? Another problem is, that the program does not remember the last view you have chosen. If you would like to use the list based view, you will have to set it up each time you start the app. The last weakness I found was that the functions of the direction keys are not changed when switching to landscape mode. In consequence handling does not work intuitively anymore.

Conclusion

Especially for software developers Y-Tasks could be a very interesting application. For the common user this application does not offer plenty of useful features. Otherwise the idea of this plug-in based software makes it pretty easy to extend functionality. Taking into account, that there are some weaknesses I rate Y-Tasks with 3 of 5 stars.

My first review looks at an alternative browser for Symbian smartphones. If you like browsing the WWW on your cellphone like me and are unsatisfied with your standard browser then Opera Mobile could be an option.

Review conditions

We tested the latest Opera Mobile for S60 3rd edition, version 8.65. The application was installed on a Nokia N80. To connect to the Internet we used wireless LAN.

Installation

The Installation of Opera Mobile is easy as usual. You can get the browser from www.opera.com. Just download the sisx-file and install the browser from your Computer or directly from your phone. Just follow the instructions and you will find Opera in your programs.

First view

Before you see the local starting page of Opera Mobile the program informs you about the evaluation. Opera Mobile is not free. But you can test Opera Mobile for 30 days. After you continue the browser shows the local page. You can enter a Web address, search for something with Google, go to one of your Top 10 websites or use the help pages.

Main features

Opera Mobile offers a few really good and useful features.

Opera Mobile is the fastest, most secure browser available for S60

This excerpt from the official Opera Mobile website is mostly true. The browser really loads web-pages very fast (for a cellphone) and shows the progress while loading. When you are browsing Opera Mobile automatically creates your Top 10 on the local page and also saves a history of visited websites for every session. But the browser lets you delete your private data if you want to cover your tracks. Opera Mobile also supports multiple windows. With the help of the menu you can close or switch between open pages.

Of course you can set bookmarks in Opera Mobile, but the browser is able to save and show feeds too. If you select an image on a website, you can open, save or send it directly like it is shown in the second screenshot. Another gimmick of Opera Mobile is to send addresses via SMS, MMS or E-mail. And last but not least the browser also features a search-function so that it is possible to find terms on websites. So you can see that Opera Mobile supports a lot of features you are used to from your computer browser.

Handling

Opera Mobile is very much based on shortcuts. With the hash key and the numbers you can perform different actions, for example go to a new website (#1). It is possible to configure the shortcuts in the settings to meet your requirements. The default display option is fit to screen: the whole website will be rearranged to fit the size of your screen. We would recommend to disable fit to screen because it destroys almost every page layout. In the first screenshot fit to screen is enabled, in the second screenshot i turned fit to screen off.The zoom Opera Mobile offers is really great. If you think the fonts are to small or to big, just select the optimal zoom-level from 20% to 250%.For better handling, the browser saves visited websites and suggests them automatically if you want to open a new website. It recommends address pre- and suffixes (of course customisable in the settings) and you can use the password manager to save your logins.

Weaknesses

We also found a few weaknesses while testing Opera Mobile.Rendering images is sometimes very slow, especially when the zoom-level is above 150%. Changing the render mode from quality to speed reduces the time for rendering images just a little bit.On a few pages xml parsing errors occurred and as a result code was directly shown on the page. Therefore the layout and design of those pages were crippled. We were also missing a landscape mode. For the most websites this would reduce scrolling from left to right and backwards. Maybe with a Nokia N95 this would work automatically.

Conclusion

Opera Mobile offers a lot more features than the standard browser. It supports multiple windows, feeds, a detailed zoom, find in page, etc..But on the other hand Opera Mobile also has a few weaknesses the standard browser doesn’t have. For example xml parsing errors and slower image-rendering. I’d like to give Opera Mobile 4 stars because of all the useful features but due to the fact that Opera is not free my rating is 3 of 5 stars.

One of the greatest Websites, that stands for Web 2.0 like no other is Youtube. Youtube is everywhere, everyone knows Youtube. The online-video community grows bigger and bigger. That is why users want to access videos even from their mobile phones. One solution for watching Youtube content is a program called emTube. We gave it a try, and here are the results.

Review Conditions

We tested the current version 1.0.10 of emTube, that was released on January the 19th. The testing-device was a Nokia E65 using a wireless-lan connection for accessing the online content.

Installation

EmTube is only supported by Series60 3rd Edtion smartphones, because it uses libraries, that are not offered in the 2nd Edition of Symbian OS. After downloading the installation file from the official website you have to ensure, that you allowed the phone to install unsigned software also. You do that by going to the application manager, jump into the settings and turn the entry “Software installation” to “All”. Otherwise you will get a certificate error when trying to install. After that the installation is as easy as known from other applications.

First view

After starting emTube watching the first videos is pretty fast. Just choose featured, top rated or most viewed, as known from Youtube, from the menu and click a video. That’s it! It begins streaming immediately, in the top you will be shown the progress of caching the video. Fast-forwarding and rewinding works surprisingly speedy. Really nice, if the clip is fully loaded.

Main features

Naturally the main feature of emTube is watching Youtube videos. You can either search for them, enter the url or ID directly, or browse lists of featured, top rated, most viewed or by author. Once an internet connection is required, you are asked to choose your connection. After a clip is opened, the programm starts streaming it to your phone. There are several shortcuts to controll playback, but unless you visit the official website you will have to find out by yourself, which keys are for doing what. For instance you can switch between normal and landscape mode by pressing [1].

Also possible are muting, pausing and resuming playback. So far emTube is really useful. But what makes it even better is, that it supports watching locally stored flash videos. That could either be videos you downloaded via emTube, yes that little programm can download them, or flash files you got anywhere else. Now you do not need to have an internet connection established for watching your favourite clips. If you don’t wish to download all videos you like, emTube could manage them in a list. For people who own a Nokia N95, or any other smartphone with a motion sensor, it is also possible to turn on autorotate. If enabled, emTube switches to landscape mode automatically when turning the device.

Handling

All in all the navigation of emTube is good. It supports the special buttons for lowering or turning up the volume level and has shortcuts for the main functions need in playback. If in landscape mode, the functions of the navigation keys change in order to offer intuitive handling.

Weaknesses

Since Youtube is very much based on interaction, it is vital to read and write comments or rate the videos. All that is not possible yet. But don’t mind, the developer already plans including these features, besides uploading own videos. In the settings tab emTube offers some simple customisation possibilities. Setting up the standard playback mode to landscape would be nice, as well as choosing a default folder for downloading videos .

Conclusion

Up to now emTube cannot replace the Youtube-Platform utterly. For watching and downloading Youtube videos or viewing your own flash files it is a great application, perhaps the best. Taking into account, that emTube will get further improvements but does not offer full functionality yet, I rate it with 4 of 5 stars.
